Even The Playing Field

Do you want to learn a trick that will put you ahead of others? A trick that will make you stand out and achieve more than you have ever dreamed? Through some recent coaching and insight I have come to realise that we all have the potential to access this special something. And guess what? It’s completely free and everyone has the same opportunity of accessing it.

Firstly, we need to understand that most of us are playing the same game… the game of success and money. I’m not talking to the millionaires who have already won the game, of course, but I’m talking about those of us who have never had much handed to them on a silver platter and have barely scratched by. We spend day in and out trying to go to the next level, get that promotion and make more money, but it remains out of reach, mostly. Then you get the few who make it, and we all think that it’s luck or that the person has special circumstances. But is it really so?

What if I told you that these people who succeed have a “special” insight that changed the way they work and think? What if I told you that every single one of us on the planet has equal access to this valuable resource, would you believe me? Probably not. This world is unfair – everyone lives under different circumstances and some believe that there is this “Murphy’s Law” that’s always working against them.

So what do I keep harping on about, what is this special something that will change your life?

24 hours

1440 minutes

86400 Seconds

This is how much time we all share in a day. There is not a single person on this planet that has more seconds than you and no one has a 25 hour day (even if a certain chocolate wants to make you believe otherwise). We have all been gifted the same amount of time in a day. We are all equal. It’s what you do with that time that will change your life.

I have watched people who work, eat, sleep and repeat. They never move anywhere and they never achieve anything. They are normally the first to complain about how busy they are and how little time they have.

Then you get the single mothers who work two jobs, look after their children, cook and clean – all while trying to study on the side to improve their quality of life and provide everything they can for their family. You never hear them complain, they just keep moving forward and eventually they break through.

When I hear of these stories my first reaction is to think “How on earth do they manage to do all of that?”. I barely manage to balance work, exercise, social time and studies, never mind children and a second job.

So how do they do it? They don’t have a choice – that’s how they do it.

Imagine your current jam-packed schedule. You barely have time to even think, never mind go for a much needed family visit. One day, a family member falls ill and lands up in hospital – suddenly you are spending an extra hour every day visiting them. That’s 7 hours a week that you managed to find the time for. All your other work is still fine and you manage to balance everything. How were you able to achieve such a magnificent feat? I’ll tell you how: you don’t have a choice. You were forced to make time, and so you did.

Successful people don’t give themselves the luxury of wasting time on gossip, complaining, watching TV or procrastinating. They have a full 18 hour day planned, which leaves 6 hours for sleep. Any lollygagging means that they have less time to sleep. They commit to the task ahead and don’t give themselves a choice. If you want that degree, don’t get up 5 times an hour for snacks or loo breaks – you make sure that the hour spent studying is a productive and meaningful one. If you want to be promoted, don’t spend the first hour of work chatting and drinking coffee, make sure those 8 hours at work are so productive that you don’t need to take work home with you.

Be more conscious of your time and utilise it better. If you want to achieve something, don’t give yourself a choice in the matter, just do it!
